BOOK PROJECT

Investing in Influence: Multinational Firms and Political Power in Developing Economies

This book manuscript examines how multinational firms in the developing world form coalitions with domestic firms to lobby for liberalization in regulations or to reinforce market barriers and preferential regulations. I argue that when domestic firms are highly concentrated by size or sector, they are likely to form coalitions that counter reforms and attempt to maintain existing regulations, reinforcing patterns of political representation. Methodologically, the book employs a formal theory, a series of case studies of investments in Latin America, and cross-national analyses of shifts in regulations.
